You forgot to mention a few important pieces of information about smoking when you made your "while we're at it why don't we tax all of these other bad things"

1) The only safe level of consumption of tobacco, either directly or indirectly is zero.

2) The personal consumption of the other bad products such as soft drink has no impact on the health people around you while you are consuming it.

3) The other bad products are not intrinsically addictive, nor are they delivered in a manner that is specifically designed to maximise the potency of the addictive chemical.

Anything we can do that will make someone either give up smoking or prevent them from starting to smoke is a good idea.

My only concern is that the revenue raised by such taxes tends to find its way into consolidated revenue rather than being 100% allocated to treatment, research and health promotion.
